Mental Health
At
some time in their life many people have emotional or mental health
problems which cannot be resolved by talking to friends or family.
Your doctor can often help, but it is sometimes advisable to talk
to a trained therapist who can help people understand their problems
in greater detail.
The
mental health team provides a comprehensive service for people
with a variety of emotional and mental health problems. The team
includes a counsellor, a psychologist, a drugs counsellor and
a visiting consultant psychiatrist. All may be seen at the medical
centre.
Depending
on the nature of the problem we offer a number of different therapeutic
approaches including individual counselling and group psychotherapy.
Counselling usually involves between six and twelve weekly appointments.
Although most people can be helped by a brief period of ‘talking
therapy’, some may need longer term help.
If
you think you may benefit from seeing someone from the mental
health team, please first discuss the problem with your doctor,
who may then refer you to the team.
