Midwifery
We
offer a full antenatal and postnatal service. Our midwives hold
their antenatal clinics on Thursdays all day and Friday mornings.
The doctors also share in the care of pregnant women with the
midwives. In general, patients will see their doctor and midwives
on alternate appointments.
Under
current guidance, the midwife will aim to first see the newly
pregnant mother at about 10 weeks of the pregnancy. At this visit,
every pregnant woman has a full assessment, given comprehensive
advice on their pregnancy and have a set of blood tests done at
that time. All women will now be offered a nuchal scan, which
done at about 12 weeks of the pregnancy. This will be done at
The John Radcliffe Hospital. A full anomaly scan will be carried
out at about 20 weeks. Thereafter, pregnant women will attend
the surgery for regular visits. If at any time a problem is suspected
or there is an existing problem, women will be refered to the
Obstetric Unit at The John Radcliffe Hospital.
After
the delivery, women are visited at home by their midwives. The
health visitors then take over the care of mother and baby after
10 days. The doctor will do a six week post natal check.
Currently
we have two midwives who run clinics on Thursdays and Fridays:
